"Shares of electroshock gun maker Taser are up 28 percent over the past week amid speculation that the events in Ferguson, Mo., could boost demand for the company’s cameras. Investors are speculating that following the shooting death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9, the body cameras produced by Taser will soon be de rigueur for police departments nationwide, creating a profit boom for the company."
When I saw the headline “Protests In Ferguson Push Taser’s Stock Higher” I was appalled, but it turns out to be pretty awesome. (x)
Yes, it is actually still appalling that investors are trying to make a quick buck on a violent homicide committed by a police officer and a long American history of institutionalized racism. But because we are a capitalist oligarchy, nothing much gets done in this country without there being a solid financial reason for it.
A lot of people, including the Taser corporation, are now deeply financially invested in making sure that police officers get body cameras. It’s a poor reason, but it’s a powerful one all the same.
